Narrowing items

This is a good way of reducing the number of titles that match a search. By narrowing down the items being shown, it becomes easier for you to locate the piece you want. Often with a search, we will return a large number of titles that match your criteria - so much so, that it will take too long to look through all the results. Narrowing your search speeds up the process of finding the piece you are looking for (unless, of course, it's within the first few titles on the list, but that's just lucky...)

The Narrow Your Items and the Narrow Further options are found on the left hand side of the screen (when available). A red bar indicates how many items there are within that narrowing area in relation to the complete list of results. This means that if a narrowing option has a small red bar, there will be only a few titles that match your search criteria which fall within that narrowing option.

By using the Narrow Further menu option, you can filter the results by instrument. This removes all those titles that just aren't relevant to you, and so will help you find the piece of music you want.

Once you have 'clicked' on a narrowing option, you will notice that the option you have selected shows red. This is to help you remember which option you have selected.
